Sunday, June 8th is the day we celebrate the Day of Pentecost. After Jesus’ resurrection, He remained on the earth for 40 days before ascending into Heaven. It is interesting to note that if Jesus had not gone to heaven, we would not be able to go. Jesus returned to Heaven to act as our High Priest. In John 14:15-18, Jesus began to prepare His disciples for what was coming. He knew that He would be leaving, but He made a significant promise, “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever—.” (AMPC) Jesus was talking about the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. God is a Spirit, and there is a spiritual realm which we cannot see. It is the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised would come and live on the inside of us when we are born again. That is how close Jesus wants to be to us. Jesus knew that we would need help to live this life for Him. In John 16:6-7 Jesus further explained that even though it would bring sorrow when He left, it would be better for us “Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you.” Jesus knew that we would need the Holy Spirit.
Before returning to Heaven, Jesus gave instructions to his disciples. In I Corinthians 15:6, the Bible says that Jesus appeared to more than 500 at once, but on the Day of Pentecost it was 120 that were there waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told them not to leave because they needed something more. They needed the Holy Ghost, and we still need Him today. Only the Holy Spirit can satisfy us. Only He can fill us. He can change our appetite for everything except Jesus. It is through born again people that God still works, through people who love Him. People who are filled with the Holy Ghost are those people God uses to bless others. The Holy Ghost flowing through the church is that which will change the world!
What happened ten days after Jesus returned to Heaven changed the world forever. “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4 There is a place inside each of us that only God can fill, but we can’t experience God when we are hanging onto something else. When God begins to move, we must give up control. Comparing the world and the Kingdom of God, the things of this world are like the prodigal son eating pig slop, but God can change our appetite. We must allow Him to touch us, change us. We must become hungry for the things of God. We must open the door and allow Jesus to come in. “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37-38 God is an eternal river, and if any man thirst, he must drink, but we must drink the right thing. If we drink what the world offers, we will be dehydrated and sickly, but if we drink of the river of living water, we will never thirst again. The Holy Spirit is the answer, but will you allow Him to change your appetite? Will you hunger and thirst for Him? Will you allow Him to fill you?
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
