Can you see what is invisible? If you are a born-again child of God, you can! Pastor Nathan began looking at this interesting topic today in his message entitled, “Seeing the Invisible.”
In Hebrews 11:24-26, we looked at the life of Moses which is full of types and shadows of Jesus Christ. Moses supernaturally survived his childhood because he had parents who looked ahead and saw who he would become. Then Moses, himself, refused to be called the son of Pharoah’s daughter. He looked ahead and saw a reward greater than the riches of Egypt. Later, God opened Moses’ eyes to see the person God had called him to be.
In the same way, God desires that we open our spiritual eyes to see eternal things. When we keep our eyes upon Jesus, we can look into the eternal realm and see what God has called us to do. As Christians, we should be different from the world. You could even say it is normal for a Christian to be misunderstood by the world. We are called to be different. We should see and hear differently from the world because there is more to this life than the natural world we see. We are called to take our eyes off the problems and see things with a different set of eyes. Just like Moses had to endure hardships, it takes discipline to follow God. Our path may not always be easy, but the promised land is there before us! We must learn to see with a different set of eyes and hear with our ears tuned to the spirit.
When we look at the story of Adam and Eve, we can see that their vision was changed by sin. When they chose to disobey God, their eyes were opened to evil, but they lost their ability to see God. (Genesis 3:7) Sin blinded them to the truth. However, when we are born again, our spiritual eyes can be reopened to see the things of the spirit realm once again. We can see through the eyes of faith. (II Corinthians 5:7)
The unregenerated man is both deaf and blind to what God is doing. (II Corinthians 4:4) “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is! (Matthew 6:22-23 NLT) Jesus was speaking of the invisible realm all around us. When the eyes of our spirit man are redeemed, we will see differently. We will be able to see all that belongs to us in Christ. In contrast, those who are living in darkness have unhealthy eyes full of darkness and evil. In man’s own eyes he chooses what he thinks is right when it is actually evil. Therefore, evil is increasing in these last days, but there is good news! The Kingdom of God is also advancing!
As children of God whose eyes have been enlightened, it is our responsibility to preach the gospel, to bring light to this dark world, to open the eyes of the blind and reveal the mystery of the gospel. “But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. (Matthew 13:16-17 ESV) What an awesome privilege we have been given to live in the age of grace, the church age, and to see what others down through the ages of time longed to see! Even greater still, we have been given the solemn responsibility to preach the gospel. Jesus desires to reveal this mystery to a world blinded by darkness. Jesus desires to reveal His glory. Not only that, if we are to endure in these last days, we must be able to see the invisible. We must stand firm in faith.
Finally, we will need the spirit of wisdom and revelation. I Corinthians 2:9 NKJ says, “But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” Your natural eyes and ears cannot see or hear all that God has prepared for us. We must learn to see and hear with our spiritual eyes and ears, for God reveals Himself through the Holy Spirit. We will know that we know what our imagination has never seen. The Holy Spirit will show us the deep things of God. (Ephesians 1:8-9)
So, can you see what is invisible? Resoundingly, yes! Begin this week to seek God like never before. Seek to see into the realm of the spirit, into the realm of faith. (Hebrews 11:1 NLT) Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
